New This Week: |
The peppers have arrived! Both Lancaster Farm Fresh Coop and Paradise Organics will provide us with Organic GREEN BELL PEPPERS on Tuesday afternoon. Martin Luther King High School Farm will bring CAYENNE, HABANERO & POBLANO HOT PEPPERS on Wednesday.
Rineer Family Farms are finally harvesting their delicious HEIRLOOM TOMATOES (primarily Brandywine & Conestoga). They also grow a wide array of new and heirloom varieties of CHERRY & GRAPE TOMATOES, selling them in colorful mixed pints of red, gold, pink and white. They will be delivering these treats throughout the week.
Flavorful IPM YELLOW CLINGSTONE PEACHES were delivered on Tuesday from Beechwood Orchards. Three Springs Fruit Farm will deliver 'RISING STAR' & 'SENTRY' YELLOW SEMI-CLINGSTONE PEACHES on Friday.
The year's first ORGANIC OKRA arrived from Lancaster Farm Fresh Coop on Tuesday. |

Message from Ruth Holbrook, Co-Manager of the Fair Food Farmstand |
| Back
to top > |
As the season heats up, and the Farmstand overflows with all kinds of fruits and vegetables, we become hyper-aware of how perishable some of our products can be. Since our produce is picked at its peak of freshness and not subjected to any kind of chemical preservative, stocking the stand starts to feel like an endless battle with time and the heat of the lights. Having no way (as of yet!) to keep displayed produce refrigerated, we are starting to realize that certain items are just inappropriate for our current retail structure. The most obvious of these are bagged salad greens (baby arugula, spring mix etc...), which are both extremely delicate and labor intensive.
With some reluctance, we have therefore decided to discontinue selling all bagged salad greens during the week, until we can invest in an appropriate way to display them. But don't be too worried: if you need your Paradise Organics arugula fix, we will still be selling baby greens on Saturday mornings (when the bags don't stay on the shelves long enough to be damaged). Your understanding in this matter is much appreciated!

This is an African recipe, but okra and shrimp are traditionally paired in many cuisines, and really compliment each other. See Sarah's recipe for African-Style Okra and Shrimp at the bottom of this email.
We'd
love to get submissions from you, our very talented customers, for
our recipe section. We know you're making wonderful dishes with

African-Style Okra and Shrimp
1 lb young Okra pods
1 lb shrimp
4 large tomatoes
1 Onion, coarsely chopped
1 green bell pepper, seeded and coarsely chopped
1/2 cup white wine
6 tbsp vegetable oil (preferably olive but sunflower will do)
2 tbsp lemon juice
2 tbsp parsely, finely chopped
salt and pepper for seasoning, to taste
Top and tail the Okra pods (ie cut off the ends). Cut the pods into
approximately 1/4 inch rounds. Peel and devein the shrimp.
Pop the tomatoes into boiling water for 30 seconds, remove, peel and chop.
Heat the oil in a large skillet until it begins to shimmer. Place the onion and bell pepper in the skillet and saute until the onion becomes translucent.
Add all the other ingredients, except the shrimp and bring to the boil, reduce the heat immediately and simmer until the tomatoes are soft and done. Stir ocassionally.
Add the shrimp and continue cooking for about 4 minutes until the shrimp becomes opaque.
Serve hot over hot rice or other grain. In Africa, this dish is ideally served over 'yellow raisin rice.'
