New This Week:

We have a great variety of baby root vegetable this week! CYLINDRA & CHIOGGIA BEETS will arrive from Lancaster Farm Fresh Coop on Tuesday; Weaver's Way Farm will drop off both HAKUREI & BABY RED TURNIPS Friday morning, while Overbrook Herb Farm , Lancaster Farm Fresh, and Tuscarora Organic Growers Co-Op will all provide BABY CARROTS throughout the week.

The first of the summer BASIL arrived at the stand from Paradise Organics on Tuesday. Gottschell Farm will add to our supply of ITALIAN BASIL on Wednesday afternoon, and Overbrook Herb Farm will bring us a small amount of deep purple OPAL BASIL on Friday morning (which, by the way, goes great with strawberries!)

Have you ever tried making iced sun tea? For those of you new to this old summer standby, just take a handful of fresh herbs (plus some black or green tea, if desired), throw them into a gallon jar with a lid, and fill with fresh water. Place the jar on a sunny porch or windowsill until steeped (8-10 hrs), remove leaves & serve. This refreshing (and healthy beverage) would truly shine with Green Meadow Farm 's WILD & WOOLY MINT, Weaver's Way Farm 's LEMON BALM, Lancaster Farm Fresh Coop's CHAMOMILE, and/or Overbrook Herb Farm 's LEMON VERBENA.

Message from Sarah Cain, Co-Manager of Fair Food Farmstand
Back to top >

Documentary film company, Kontentreal, has invited the Fair Food Farmstand to be in their latest e2 production, which is aired on PBS . The first season of e2 revolved around issues of energy demand and production, and the second on sustainability in design. Beautifully saturated cinematography and an overall hopeful message characterize their work. The new season focuses on transportation. For the episode we will be featured in, 'food miles' is the theme. Earlier this week they filmed at the White Dog Café, Green Meadow Farm, Meadow Run Farm, and this Friday they will be filming us at the Farmstand! They are also interviewing Michael Pollan.

In honor of this honor, we've compiled a Google Map (thank you, Louisa!) of all the farms and businesses that currently supply the Farmstand. Click on the image to the right to see the interactive version of this map. A copy will also be available at the Farmstand, as well as a link from our webpage. We will be adding to and updating this map, so check back often!

The new season e2 will air this fall. We'll announce the date of "our" episode when we know it!

Our first farm tour of the season!
Saturday, June 28 | 10:00-2:00
U-Pick Berries and Cherries
Weaver's Orchard, Morgantown, PA

Stock up on berries that you pick yourself at Weaver's Orchard. We'll pick red and black raspberries, sweet and sour cherries, possibly blueberries and take home some of the last strawberries of the season!  On our visit to Farmer Ed Weaver's fourth generation, 100-acre fruit orchard and vegetable farm, you'll learn about growing fruit using the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach to farming. Our tour will be topped off with with a delicious picnic featuring strawberry shortcakes made with berries that we have picked ourselves! You'll have plenty of time to shop at their wonderful farm market (including their bakery and ice cream stand).

Ticket price includes a deliciously fresh and local picnic, and a donation to Fair Food.
Prices:  $25 adult, $12 child (6-13); Kids under 6 are free.
Discounts may be available for groups of 5 or more.
FMNP (WIC or Seniors) participants receive a 50% discount.

We do not want the cost of the tours to deter you from connecting with your local farms and farmers; grants to cover the cost of attending the farm tour may be available on a case-by-case basis.  Please inquire below.

Strawberry Jam
Makes about 4 cups
Active time: 1 1/4 hr. Start to finish: 1 1/2 hr

Ingredients:
3 lb. ripe strawberries (4 1/2 pints), rinsed and hulled
4 cups sugar
1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
Special equipment: 4 half-pint canning jars with lids

Preparation:
Sterilize canning jars and lids.
Crush strawberries lightly with a potato masher in a 7- to 9-qt. heavy nonreactive pot. Simmer, stirring occasionally, 10 minutes.
Add sugar and lemon juice and simmer, stirring constantly, until sugar is dissolved, about 2 minutes. Bring to a full boil and cook, stirring frequently (be careful not to let bottom scorch) and skimming off any foam. It’s done when it becomes slightly thickened and a teaspoon of jam begins to gel when dropped on a chilled plate, after 10 to 20 minutes of boiling. Ladle hot jam into jars, filling to within 1/4 inch of top. Wipe rims with a dampened cloth and seal with lids.
Put jars in a water-bath canner or on a rack set in a deep pot. Add enough hot water to cover jars by 2 inches and bring to a boil. Boil jars, covered, 15 minutes, and transfer with tongs to a rack. Cool completely and store in a cool, dark place.

Note: You can make lower sugar jams, but need a 'low sugar pectin,' like Pomona's Pectin. The box will give you full instructions.
