New This Week: |
|
Look for Craig LaBan’s article about Cherry Grove Farm’s FILATA RUSTICA in Thursday’s Philadelphia Inquirer. We are proud to have introduced Cherry Grove Farm cheese to the Philadelphia marketplace. Now their farmer, Kelly, and cheese-maker, Megan, are working hard to fill the demand for their farmstead cheeses. We can’t wait to try the new SHIPPETAUKEN BLUE, a creamy blue cheese with a bloomy rind. Kelly will also deliver a new round of Farmstand favorite HARVEST TOMA, a decadent washed-rind cheese, on Thursday afternoon.
It’s finally time for the early summer Brassicas (plants in the cabbage family). Paradise Organics in Paradise, PA delivered its first batch of crisp BROCCOLI and NAPA CABBAGE on Tuesday, while Weaver Way Farm will drop off both PURPLE and WHITE KOHLRABI on Wednesday afternoon.
If you haven’t tried GARLIC SCAPES yet, you’re missing out! These curly flower shoots of the garlic plant look like they belong in a vase, but are even better chopped raw over salad, scrambled into eggs, or crushed into a zesty pesto. This is just beginning of scape season, but Tuscarora Organic Growers Co-Op will drop a few pounds by the stand on Tuesday.
For a unique breakfast, try some “PEE WEE” PULLET EGGS from Natural Acres Farm in Millersburg, PA. These tiny vibrant eggs are laid by “pullets” (chickens less than a year old). As hens begin to mature into their egg laying capacity, they lay what some consider their most flavorful eggs. With the industrialized food trend toward jumbo eggs, these miniature treats are hard to find, but worth the effort and incredibly economical.
Gottschell Farm in Coopersburg, PA will bring by the season’s first HAKUREI TURNIPS on Thursday evening. This Japanese salad turnip is uniquely crisp and sweet—delicious raw, braised, or sautéed with their own greens.

Early summer is always an interesting time for eggs. Young chickens are just figuring out how this whole laying business works and older ones are getting back into their stride. Eggs pop out all shapes and sizes, they turn up in strange places, some even have two yolks (as Meadow Run enthusiasts have lately been finding!) or no yolks at all. You’d never know this at the supermarket, where eggs have a consistent shape and are sorted by size, but Farmstand eggs are another story. If there’s a product that convinces people on a sensory level that there’s really something to this whole “buy local” thing, it’s farm fresh eggs. You just can’t miss the difference! In celebration of this wonderful food, we are offering a special on pastured eggs this week (see prices below).
SPECIAL ON PASTURED EGGS:
Lancaster Farm Fresh Eggs - $3.00/dozen (regularly $3.75)
Natural Acres Organic Eggs - $3.50/dozen (regularly $4.25)
Meadow Run Eggs - $3.75/dozen (regularly $4.25)
Natural Acres “Pee Wee” Pullet Eggs - $0.75/dozen!
We are sad to relate that Oley Valley Mushrooms will not be delivering their gorgeous mushrooms to the Stand until next fall. The heat has finally set in, and they are due for their summer break in production. We will be filling the gap with shiitakes and oysters from Mother Earth Farms in Quarryville, PA… but Oley Valley will be missed. |

Recipes - Sourdough Buckwheat Pancakes |
| Back

|
This week, Pauline Candaux provides us with her grandmother's recipe for sourdough buckwheat pancakes. According to Pauline, good flour makes all the difference: "Haldeman’s buckwheat flour, sold at the Fair Food Farmstand, is a higher quality flour than I have found elsewhere." The recipe is at the bottom
of this email.
We'd
love to get submissions from you, our very talented customers, for
our recipe section. We know you're making wonderful dishes with
the local farm products you buy at the 'Stand (because we hear you
talking about them), and we'd love to get some of your recipes for
this email. Please send
them to us! |
