New This Week:

We have a great selection of head lettuces this week, perfect for cooling salads and sandwiches. Lancaster Farm Fresh in Quarryville, PA will provide RED, FRECKLED AND GREEN ROMAINE LETTUCES on Tuesday. Overbrook Herb Farm will bring us a lovely butterhead/romaine mix called “WINTER DENSITY” on Friday morning, and Paradise Organics will drop by more of that spectacular RED OAK LEAF LETTUCE on Tuesday.

For some interesting additions to your salads, try: flowery PEA SHOOTS and ANISE HYSSOP from Weavers Way Farm, FERN-LEAF DILL from Tuscarora Organic Growers Co-op, and FENNEL BULB from Paradise Organics.

The peas have arrived! Overbrook Herb Farm in Lansdale, PA will bring us SHELLING GARDEN PEAS and SNOW PEAS on Friday morning. Fresh SHELLED PEAS, perfect for bright pea soup or pasta sauce, will be coming from Fifer Orchards in Wyoming, DE on Thurday. Plus, Landisdale Farm in Jonestown, PA will deliver more of those sun-sweetened SUGAR SNAP PEAS (the perfect hot weather snack!) on Wednesday.

Green Meadow Farm in Gap, PA will deliver the season’s first SLICING CUCUMBERS and tender YOUNG ZUCCHINI on Thursday afternoon.

ALSO! Don't miss our STRAWBERRY SPECIAL: it's time to start the water boiling in your canning pots. This week we made a large purchase of beautiful chemical-free strawberries and are selling them in flats of 16 pints for only $37.95 (regular retail would be $68.00). You must purchase an entire flat to receive the "canners' discount." See our recipe section for some ideas on what to do with all those gems.

Message from Emily Gunther, Fair Food Intern
Back to top >

This week, American consumers have been overrun with a fear of salmonella from one of our favorite vegetables (or fruits for that matter)… tomatoes! The media are having a field day, parents are worried, and kids have another excuse to get out of eating their vegetables.

There is something strange about this situation, however. Salmonella does not naturally occur in or on tomatoes or other produce. It is an animal-borne bacteria, which can only be spread to produce or other food products through cross contamination, such as careless food handling. The centralized industrial food system allows enormous corporate farms to raise large numbers of animals on small amounts of land in confined conditions. Though no one knows exactly where or how this outbreak occurred, this is the ideal environment for spreading bacteria like salmonella. Within a system that encourages "efficiency" over food safety, products can be handled improperly, thus increasing the risk of a food-borne illness outbreak. Coupled with the inability to trace where all this corporate food originates, this system exacerbates the outbreaks. One instance of contamination can quickly impact 17 different states, as in our current situation! Panic often ensues, so even though PA and NJ growers have been ruled OUT as the culprits, they can still struggle to sell their crops.

Luckily, if you are shopping at the Farmstand, none of this will affect you. Supporting smaller sustainable farms encourages genetic diversity and humane conditions for workers and animals. Buying locally also minimizes the distance that food travels.  Most importantly, we know where our tomatoes come from, how they are produced, and who handles them--the best way to prevent the spread of food-borne illness like salmonella and enjoy your favorite farm-fresh products. This week, red and green tomatoes from Green Meadow Farm and grape tomatoes from Paradise Organics can provide your tomato fix until July when we will be up to our elbows in heirlooms!

Timothy La Salle, CEO of the Rodale Institute will speak about their 60 years of research on regenerative farming methods that can curb global warming, improve the nutrient value of food and prevent famine when farmers use these affordable and sustainable techniques. Brian Snyder, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture will speak about the organization's work to improve the economic and social prosperity of Pennsylvania food and agriculture. Ann Karlen, Director of the Fair Food Project will give the local perspective on bringing locally grown food into the Philadelphia marketplace and promoting a humane and sustainable agriculture for the Greater Philadelphia region.

Strawberry Jam
Makes about 4 cups
Active time: 1 1/4 hr. Start to finish: 1 1/2 hr

Ingredients:
3 lb. ripe strawberries (4 1/2 pints), rinsed and hulled
4 cups sugar
1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
Special equipment: 4 half-pint canning jars with lids

Preparation:
Sterilize canning jars and lids.
Crush strawberries lightly with a potato masher in a 7- to 9-qt. heavy nonreactive pot. Simmer, stirring occasionally, 10 minutes.
Add sugar and lemon juice and simmer, stirring constantly, until sugar is dissolved, about 2 minutes. Bring to a full boil and cook, stirring frequently (be careful not to let bottom scorch) and skimming off any foam. It’s done when it becomes slightly thickened and a teaspoon of jam begins to gel when dropped on a chilled plate, after 10 to 20 minutes of boiling. Ladle hot jam into jars, filling to within 1/4 inch of top. Wipe rims with a dampened cloth and seal with lids.
Put jars in a water-bath canner or on a rack set in a deep pot. Add enough hot water to cover jars by 2 inches and bring to a boil. Boil jars, covered, 15 minutes, and transfer with tongs to a rack. Cool completely and store in a cool, dark place.

Note: You can make lower sugar jams, but need a 'low sugar pectin,' like Pomona's Pectin. The box will give you full instructions.
