New This Week: |
|
Green Meadow Farm in Gap, PA will have some exciting new items for us on Thursday afternoon. Along with more of those tender snow peas and ripe tomatoes, Ian will drop off tiny CIPPOLINI ONIONS (sweet Italian heirlooms) and LAMB’S QUARTERS (a succulent spinach-like wild green).
It’s finally time for those frilly endives! TRES FINE ENDIVE from Tuscarora Organic Growers Co-op in Hustontown, PA will arrive on Tuesday, while Weaver Way Farm in Mt. Airy will deliver FRISEE ENDIVE (by bike!) on Wednesday afternoon.

A word about growing pains… The Farmstand is now fully in 'season,' our REALLY busy time. And just to give you an idea of our growth, our sales were 65% higher this February than last. And that was in February – not an ideal month for local food. Last year we were buying from more than 65 local farms and producers – this year we're up to more than 90!
This kind of growth does not come without growing pains. As much as we try to monitor all the offerings on the 'Stand, we recognize that sometimes things slip by us. Ann got some spinach this weekend that certainly shouldn't have been for sale. As always, we want you to be as excited when you get that bag of greens or anything else home, as when you saw it on display. If you are ever unsatisfied with something you have purchased just remember we will always exchange it or give you credit to replace it.
To meet the growing needs of the Farmstand, we've ramped up our storage capacity with a new walk-in refrigerator that is about 50% larger than our old one. Added cold storage will improve the accessibility and rotation of our produce, as well as make our staff a lot less stressed out. We don't want you to buy something from us just because you support our mission, but because you're confident that it will be delicious when you get it home! As always, thank you for all your support.

Our first farm tour of the season!
Saturday, June 28 | 10:00-2:00
U-Pick Berries and Cherries
Weaver's Orchard, Morgantown, PA
Take home some of the last strawberries of the season when we go berry picking at Weaver's Orchard. Stock up on berries as we pick our own red and black raspberries, sweet and sour cherries, and possibly blueberries as well! On our visit to Farmer Ed Weaver's fourth generation, 100-acre fruit orchard and vegetable farm, you'll learn about growing fruit using the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach to farming. Our tour will be topped off with with a delicious picnic featuring strawberry shortcakes made with berries that we have picked ourselves! You'll have plenty of time to shop at their wonderful farm market (including their bakery and ice cream stand).
For more information on IPM, you can go to: http://www.epa.gov/opp00001/factsheets/ipm.htm
Ticket price includes a deliciously fresh and local picnic, and a donation to Fair Food.
Prices: $25 adult, $12 child (6-13); Kids under 6 are free.
Discounts may be available for groups of 5 or more.
FMNP (WIC or Seniors) participants receive a 50% discount.
We do not want the cost of the tours to deter you from connecting with your local farms and farmers; grants to cover the cost of attending the farm tour may be available on a case-by-case basis. Please inquire below.
Contact Catherine Down for more information or reservations at (215)386-5211 x113 or fairfoodfarmtours@gmail.com.
White Dog Community Enterprises currently has several open positions available in our office and at the farmstand:

Recipes - Potato and Lovage Soup and Lovage Sauce |
| Back
to top > |
|
Here are two recipes using the herb Lovage, which we have in abundance at the Farmstand these days. Lovage has an intense flavor that is like a cross
between celery and anise, and a little goes a long way. The recipes for Potato and Lovage Soup and Lovage Sauce are at the bottom
of this email.
We'd
love to get submissions from you, our very talented customers, for
our recipe section. We know you're making wonderful dishes with
the local farm products you buy at the 'Stand (because we hear you
talking about them), and we'd love to get some of your recipes for
this email. Please send
them to us!

Potato and Lovage Soup
Ingredients:
2 Tbsp. olive oil
1 onion, chopped
3 cups potatoes, peeled and cubed
3 cups water
Approx. 1 1/4 cups milk
3 Tbsp. minced fresh lovage plus garnish
salt and black pepper to taste
Heat the oil in a large saucepan and add the onions and potatoes. Cook over low heat for 10 minutes. Add 3 cups of water and continue simmering until the potatoes are tender. Remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly. Puree the cooled mixture in a food processor or blender. Place into a clean pan and stir in the lovage and milk slowly, stopping when you feel it's the right thickness. Heat through, and serve with a garnish of lovage leaves. You can serve this warm or chilled.
Makes 4 servings.
Lovage Sauce
Ingredients:
2 tablespoons butter
12 lovage leaves, minced
2 tablespoons dry white wine
1 tsp. Dijon mustard
salt and black pepper
Melt the butter in a pan and sauté the lovage leaves for about 3 minutes. Add the wine and simmer for a minute. Stir in the mustard and season. This sauce is nice served over pork, chicken or even salmon.
