Message From Emily Teel, Farmstand Manager

The term "sustainable" is so closely tied to our concerns for the planet that the environment is often the focus of discussions of sustainable agriculture. We invoke images of diversified farms growing vegetables without the use of chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, and animals pasture-raised without prophylactic antibiotics or growth hormones. But we don't always think of the human side of the sustainable agriculture equation. We too often forget about the people who raise the animals or plant and harvest the produce that we all so enjoy.

Farmers' markets allow us to have a direct connection with the growers from our region, which helps us understand the growing methods and other conditions on the farm. However, distance obscures this understanding for products coming from farther away. Though White Dog Community Enterprises envisions a region that is self-reliant in essential human needs, it is instrumental to our vision that we connect to other regions with fair trade relationships. We cannot build a sustainable foodshed unless we apply the principles of sustainability to people as much as we do to plants and animals, and that means all people, our nearby farmers and those in other nations as well.

We hope you can join us next week for an event that will explore issues of International and domestic fair trade with farmers from Ecuador and the United States. The above photo is of Diann and Bobbie Johnson, and Diann will be joining us for this event.

Tour to Paradise Hill Farm: Heirloom Cranberry Bogs and
Blueberry Bushes

Saturday, October 27, 10:30-2:30pm

Vincentown, Burlington County, NJ

Paradise Hill Farm is committed to the environmental and historic conservation of New Jersey's Pine Barrens. Specializing in cranberries and blueberries, they are dedicated to preserving heirloom varieties. The blueberries that we got from them this year were just spectacular (we also now have them available frozen), and now we're offering the white and red cranberries, fresh, at the Farmstand. The farm has been in Mary Ann Thompson's family since 1890. Mary Ann's Grandmother won the Silver medal for quality at the Buffalo exposition in the early 1900s, and she is continuing that tradition today. The farm spans over 800 acres in the Pine Barrens, with 200 acres in cranberry production.
Walk out to the bogs, see their antique machinery, and hear the colorful stories.

Tickets are $25 adults, $12 children (6-13) free for children under 6. Price includes tour and deliciously fresh and local picnic on the farm. Farmers Market Nutrition Program (Senior an WIC) participants receive a 50% discount. Discounts may be available for groups of 5 or more people.

Click this link to go to our website to reserve your tickets now! If you have any questions, contact us at fairfoodfarmtours@gmail.com
